Out For Our Children works to create a positive environment for children of same-sex parents in nurseries, play-groups and schools by producing and promoting representations of diverse families, with a particular focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-parented children. We work with parents, childcare workers, teachers and others who support our aims to produce books and resources that reflect all children’s lives and family experiences.
We were originally founded in February 2004 by lesbian mothers with very young children to write guidelines as an aid for nurseries ill-prepared to welcome babies and toddlers with lesbian parents. We soon realised that appropriate resources such as books, pictures, songs, or jigsaws do not exist in this country. We set out to fill the gap. We are a registered charity and have had grants from the Lottery, the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the Media Trust.
What we want to see
Nurseries, playgroups and schools that welcome our children
Books that reflect our children’s reality
A school curriculum that includes us and educates everyone
Schools and early years settings that address prejudice and homophobia
